Like flamingoes, the cardinal’s red color comes from carotenoids in what they eat including berries and seeds. Mrs. Cardinal is a bit more muted in color, but she still sports a bright coral beak to go with her low-key beige plumage. Beyond their visual appeal, cardinals are known for their cheerful, often loud songs, which can be heard year-round.
