La Paloma Blanca Floral Designs was honored to be a part of the “Tee it up for the Troops” golf tournament held on March 14th and hosted by one of our Scottsdale favorites, Pinnacle Peak Country Club. Tee it up for the Troops is a non-profit organization that has been honoring and remembering our armed forces by organizing golf events to support veterans and their families since 2005.
To show their appreciation for the troops, one hundred fifty golfers took to the links to raise money for those who have been wounded in battle and each foursome was accompanied by a member of the military or wounded soldier flown in from Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
The mood was one of reverence and respect during the opening military ceremony which included bag pipes, Honor Guard, flyover and letters of appreciation from Senator John McCain and Governor Jan Brewer. During the National Anthem performed by Country Musician Rockie Lynne, a flock of local mallards paid their respect as they quietly passed by our nation’s flag.
A photo gallery of Arizona’s fallen soldiers stood at attention on easels and served as a powerful reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made for our grateful nation. The red, white and blue floral wreath presented to several families during the tribute would later be laid to rest at the base of the flag of the Arizona Veterans Memorial.
Words did not come easy when speaking with one of the widows who lost her husband in Iraq in 2005 at the age of 20 while serving in the US Navy. A warm hug, a heartfelt “God bless you and your family” and a single red rose fallen from the wreath for his little girl was about all I could manage.
